Beloved

Voices that seem a million miles removed ransack

My mind like hungry scavengers

All the while seeming to be but a dream.

Overwhelm rises but doesn’t quite reach the brink of my eyelids.

No tears can carry the sadness

Or sharp words the anger swelling through my arms,

Causing an all-familiar ache and feeling of falling.

Everything within wanting, waiting, writhing

While my body sits frozen, my eyes fain brightness, my mouth forces a smile.

The disassociation takes me back

To days when I needed to convince everyone

–even me–

That I was a good big sister.

The little girl can see her now, thirty-four and a professional

At the pretense of presence

The pretending people cannot push me too far.

I wonder how long I can keep this up,

How long I’ll need to convince everyone

–even me–

That I’m a good leader.

It’s not always like this.

Sometimes I thrive as I lead,

Grounded and growing, laughing and leading a song of joy.

But sometimes I catch my heart deep acting,

My brain dysregulated by a slurry of lies about my identity.

“Good leader, good leader, good leader”

Something deep in my being yells at my heart,

And I succumb to the lies, convincing everyone

–even me–

That they are truth.

My heart searches for escape but by grace

Finds resurrection.

A message moored to the Rock of Ages

Whom waves woo me to kiss and hide,

Held and tempered from the storm of my past.

The Most Resilient Leader looks at my frame

Soaked, cold, stiff, weeping.

My eyes plead with Him to notice my accomplishments,

To convinced everyone

–even me–

That I’m a good leader.

He smiles and by one look at His face

I know He’s not going to say what I want.

My eyes are cast down on the waves again.

Disappointed and despairing of ever returning to joy,

I take a shuttering breath and reconsider quitting.

Escaping by running from the pressure.

But God.

I feel Him lifting my chin, inviting me to look in His face again.

I’m not sure if I want to accept

His invitation to reorient.

Then the wind catches His words,

Rushing through the storm and into my soul

Warming and thawing me.

“Beloved.” He says. “Beloved, beloved, beloved.

You don’t need to convince everyone

–even Me–

That You are a good leader.

No longer do you simply do the actions to prove “good.”

Your identity is secure and grounded

In My character and everlasting arms.

Whether you lead or follow, work or rest,

You are mine.

You can be.

You are loved.

Beloved forever.”

He Covers Me

He Covers Me

The battle's on
The bullets fly.
I hear the wounded's
Desperate cry.
I trust.
I pray.
I know.
I see.
Jesus Christ,
He covers me.

He aims, so sure,
At Pain and Fear.
Only lets them shoot
To drive me near.
I run
Toward Him.
I hide.
I flee.
Jesus Christ,
He covers me.

Though some may wound me,
Close beside,
Yes, even in me
He abides!
I heal.
I seek
His face,
His peace.
Jesus Christ,
He covers me.

I cannot help but joy
For He
From my pain
Sets me free!
I sing.
I rest.
I simply
BE.
Jesus Christ,
He covers me.

Covered With Your Hand

The little one runs, cries,
“Why must life be so hard? Why?
Daddy, help me! Daddy! Daddy!
The World is hurting me, again; won’t you get onto Him?
He only laughs when I cry, only mocks me. Daddy, why?
Daddy, hug me! Help me! Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!
He thinks it’s wonderful when I fear; He tells me that You are not here.
He hopes he can make me believe that You will soon pick up and leave.
Daddy, hold me! Hug me! Help me! Daddy! Daddy!
He paints the future dark, and shouts, “Your Dad will break your heart.”
He bids me worry, never trust, for then my dreams might turn to dust.
Daddy, hear me! Hold me! Hug me! Help me! Daddy!”
But then you speak, I know I am
Covered With Your Hand:
Heard, hugged,
Held, helped,
Safe.

Little Girl's Feet

Little Girl's Feet
For K.S., a God-sent friend

Little girl's feet:
Dancing, singing, skipping,
Laughing over the meadow.

Unexpectedly...
Pain.
Exposure.
Tears.

Little girl's heart:
Hiding, confused, crying,
Shared with no one.

Meanwhile...
Anger.
Shame.
Fear.

Big girl's mind:
Running, fleeing, covering
Pain with sin.

A friend...
Shares.
Stays
Near.

Big girl's pain:
Spilling, showing, healing
By His hand.

She is
Held
Safe
There.

Big girl's peace:
Growing, resting, reaching
Through the days.

Because of
God.
Her friend.
And prayer.

Little girl's feet:
Dancing, singing, skipping
Like's hind's feet.

Hind's feet
Laughing over the mountains.

Kept by Thy Power, Safe in Thy Hand

In Thee I’m hiding, in Thee I rest
Safely abiding; Thy will is best.
Lord show Thy power, Thine I would be
Lord ev’ry hour I trust in Thee
Chorus

Chorus:
Kept by Thy power, safe in Thy hand
Moment by moment trusting Thy plan.
Thine arm securing, nothing can harm
While I am upheld by Thy strong arm.

Thou art my Keeper, my Hiding Place
I am Thy seeker, saved by Thy grace
Lord by Thou near me that I not fall
That Thou would hear me; answer my call!

Ye Are Kept

Ye are kept by the power of God
Safe in His hand, where e’er you trod
Wherein this promise now rejoice
Sing praises, lift ye up your voice.

Ye are kept by His mighty arm
Hidden there from the Devil’s harm.
Though ye are tempted, in this rest:
He is perfecting through this test.

Ye are kept by our Jesus Christ
Thus serve Him with your heart and life.
Protected from the Devil’s darts
Yield to Him mind and soul and heart.

I am kept by Thy power, O Lord
As I take up Thy Shield, Thy Sword.
I will fight daily enemies
Lord, help me! Thine the glory be.

His Everlasting Arms are Mine

My everlasting help is He,
He gives me strength unto my need.
His arms are ever underneath
The King of Heaven, Prince of Peace.

Chorus:
His presence goes before, behind.
His everlasting arms are mine,
His everlasting arms are mine.

He makes me strong unto the day
When walking in His narrow way.
Though much I fail, ever I find,
My Savior just, faithful, and kind.

Though Satan would my life destroy,
I rest in Christ with highest joy.
Satan cannot do anything,
Without permission from my King.

Though come a storm with driving dust,
In Jesus' arms I rest and trust.
Though some I know may taunt and jeer
These have no pow’r while He is near.

And through the ages my hope is
I will be marked as one of His.
For He is mine; and safe from harm
I press on leaning on His arm.

Secure in Hope

Because there is hope in Christ
Thou shalt be secure.
For Christ’s promises are true.
Of this one thing be sure:
He will always be with you,
He will not leave you, e’er.
Because there is hope, on Jesus
Cast your care.

Chorus:
Thou art secure
Thou art secure
Because there is hope in Christ
Thou art secure.
Thou art secure,
Thou art secure.
Because there is hope in Christ
Thou art secure.
(On last stanza use “I am secure”)

Jesus promised, ”I will send
My Comforter to you.
He will live within your heart,
Teach you My will to do.
As you do My will, My plan,
Seeking to find My way.
You will see, My Child, I guide you,
All the way.
Chorus

When with thunder roaring low
When as the raindrops fall.
When I’m struggling within,
I hear my Father call:
My dear Child, though light and ray,
Storm clouds and rain obscure
Trust in Me and do not fear,
Thou art secure!”

I will run the race with faith,
Press on toward heaven’s plain.
Eternally safe am I
Whether in sun or rain.
Christ, my Savoir walks with me,
He will not let me go.
Of all things in life, this thing,
Yea, this I know:

Ye Shall Overcome the World

Saints of God, fresh courage take,
Ye shall overcome the world.
Born of God, through grace, by faith.
Ye shall overcome the world.
Fight bravely with the Sword
Depending on your Lord.
Eternal – your reward.
Ye shall overcome the world.

Joy in Christ, the battle’s His,
Ye shall overcome the world.
He your Help and Vict’ry is;
Ye shall overcome the world.
Ye fight not flesh and blood
But fight ye foes of God.
With His whole armor shod,
Ye shall overcome the world.

Rise up take your battle arms.
Ye shall overcome the world
Safe in Christ, by no man harmed
Ye shall overcome the world.
Stand, therefore in His might
Defeating pow’rs of night.
Christ by you in the fight,
Ye shall overcome the world.

Sound the trumpet, n’er retreat!
Ye shall overcome the world
Satan and his host defeat;
Ye shall overcome the world.
Saints, on to higher ground
‘Till in His likeness found.
Loud still His promise sounds:
“Ye shall overcome the world!”

Though ye may be tempted sore
Ye shall overcome the world
Drawing strength from His rich store
Ye shall overcome the world.
Stand firmly on His name.
Boldly His promise claim:
“Like as I overcame,
Ye shall overcome the world!”

Nothing, no Nothing

I am persuaded, yea, this I know:
Jesus is with me where ever I go.
Since He has washed me in Calv’ry’s flow
I have the vict’ry o’er all of my foes.

Chorus:
Nothing, no nothing, shall separate me
From Jesus Christ and His love full and free.
Safe in His love and secured by His grace.
Through Him, I conquer whatever I face.

I am persuaded, as in Him I hide
Trusting in Jesus to lead me and guide:
Whate’er befall me, still He is beside;
As He in me and I in Him abide.

I am persuaded, this promise I claim
Through the full power of Jesus’ name:
Though still I fail, He is always the same –
Still He forgives me and takes all my shame.

I am persuaded, not depth and not height,
Not tribulations, distress, death or life,
No other creature, no matter the might,
Ever shall hide me from my Savior’s sight.
